beautiful bookmarks

Last weekend I traveled to my university to take my exams, and then I went to hang out around Beijing with my best friend, Lydia. When we were sitting by a legos pool, Lydia gave me these beautiful handmade bookmarks.

My heart melted when I saw them. When I saw the figures beautifully printed on these bookmarks, the impulse to cry swelled inside my heart, but I didn't cry; I smiled instead.

The last time I received a gift like that, it was from a friend who majored in Russian, and she my best friend of my music club at college. In my second year of college, she taught me the Russian alphabet and a few beginner expressions. I still remember, when I asked her to teach me Russian, she, without any hesitation, patiently prepared the lessons and tutored me one-on-one without expecting any favor in return. She made me this beautiful card as a birthday gift. Even though I still cannot read this Russian quote by myself, I treasure this gift a lot. It keeps motivating me to learn more Russian.

Gifts like this are the most precious to me. They don't have to cost a lot of money, but they have more soul in them. They are representations of my friendship, constantly reminding me of what we have in common—we share a love of languages, reading, music, and most importantly, that we love each other as friends. Random gifts that cost a lot of money do not touch my heart. That kind of gifts burdens me—it often leaves me at a loss as to what I could return.
